DMV Area and Maryland Highlight and Hangout Spots
Shop Time!!!
Not a hangout place but a big shout out to Frederick Community Fridge on 15 W Church St in Downtown Frederick. Described as “mutual aid collective distributing food and supplies to those who need them.” It is next to the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ.
- System Source Computer Museum
- Hunt Valley, MD
- This building is a 3-in-1 package! It has System Source's Computer Museum of various vintage computers. I went there to attend a computer repair workshop and met some interesting and passionate people. It also has the National Electronics Museum and the Bloop Museum (museum for things related to physical media entertainment). The Bloop Museum got funding to move to Pittsburgh sometime this summer. Nevertheless, I can't believe I didn't know about this wonderful place beforehand. For anyone into this stuff, I overheard about an event known as VCF East being held in New Jersey.
- Glen Echo Park
- Glen Echo, MD
- It used to be a mid century art deco amusement park. It has since been revamped into arts facilities. If you're driving there, make sure to set your GPS to “5801 Oxford Road, Glen Echo” for it to take you to the main parking lot.
- Brookside Gardens
- Wheaton, MD
- They have a gorgeous rose garden! They also have an indoor butterfly garden, a gift shop inside the information center. 50 acres of wonder!
- National Seminary Park
- Silver Spring, MD
- Very riveting and rich history. Whimsical and interesting architecture. That ballroom is insane. Most of this place has been turned into private apartments, but they do guided tours for the place once every month. Apparently someone lives in the Pagoda there. I wish that was me.
- NASA Goddard Visitor Center
- Greenbelt, MD
- Cosmicals cosmicals cosmicals. Make sure your GPS doesn't take you to the other side of the NASA campus that can only be accessed through government clearance. Had that happen to me. Access the visitor area on the main NASA Goddard Entrance on Icesat Rd.
- Patuxent Research Refuge/National Wildlife Visitor Center
- Laurel, MD
- Great for long outdoor walks! They have a cool visitor guest area with information about the local wildlife… and a gift shop with bat merch!
- Glenstone Art Museum
- Potomac, MD
- Free admission with reserved tickets. There's also big green installation in the outdoor section that looks like Shrek. Now, the semantics of this place are highly criticized. TLDR; the wife of Maryland’s billionaire is a huge fan of fine art which is why this place exists. It brings up the question: why have all this art tucked away in such a closed off location? It’s not very accessible due to the long walking distances and so far away from any communities to discover it. I’ve also heard that the billionaire guy is rivals with some other rich guy who lives just across the street, so he bought all the surrounding land and made the museum for this petty rivalry. I can’t confirm but it’s food for thought. I admit the feel of the main building has this cold, lonely, modern staleness that could only be achieved by the rich, but the artwork is nice to see. I especially love the installation for Pipilotti Rist's Ever Is Over All.
- Greenbriar Local Park
- Potomac, MD
- If you have kids… this was my childhood playground. As a child, it blew my mind how huge this place was. It is 25 acres of fun. I think this park is the first time I saw leaves of a ginkgo tree and it blew my mind.
- Temperance Alley Garden
- U Street, DC
- I haven’t been but it looks cool!
- Larz Anderson House
- Dupont Circle, DC
- They constantly hold events here and I attended a wedding here. It is gorgeous inside. A big chunk of it is basically a museum.
- United States Botanical Garden
- DC, near the Capitol
- you probably know about the Smithsonian Museums but did you know plants plants plants plants plants
- National Arboretum

- This aquarium is MASSIVE. It’s got 5 floors AND A RAINFOREST SECTION!!?? I told my buddy Ian to sample one of the bird calls from the rainforest section and he used it in one of his songs.
- American Visionary Museum
- Baltimore, MD
- Outsider art museum. Art often by lesser known artists or people from disenfranchised communities. Very interesting and different from the stuff you'd typically see in other museums. This is the art that stares into your soul. Also, the Sideshow gift shop should count as an exhibition itself. Just look at this place.

- Olney, MD
- The people here are so nice/ If you're reading this, I love you guys.
- Glen Echo Park
- Glen Echo, MD
- YES good ol' Glecho has returned in a second appearance as an entry here! Glen Echo Park used to be mid-century art deco amusement park, now it's repurposed for art classes. They hold some interesting classes in their catalog, such as Irish Dances, puppetry, stone carving, glassblowing, etc. Super interesting. I took a glassblowing workshop taught by the wonderful Valencia Glass.

- Dark Horse Studio
- Rockville, MD
- Langley Park Community Center
- Adelphi, MD
- The Pottery Studio here is the best kept secret of the DMV area. I only found out about this place because someone at a ceramics sale told me about it. I had a lot of trouble trying to find how to join the studio. DUDE I legit had to drive there and find someone inside the studio to give me the contact for who runs it and the link for signing up for classes (most of the time, the person running the front desk of the rec center who answers your phone call are pretty clueless about what's going on there). This studio has been around for AGES. Some of the people here have been using the studio since the 80s, decades before I was born. You have to be signed up for a class and have a membership to the rec center to use the studio. The place is run by Donnademma and there's like 50 handmixed glazes to choose from. It's so interesting. You would overhear about various little dramas and gossip going on at this studio. Apparently one of the staple glazes gradually changed from purple to blue over the years (LOL???). Because a lot of the studio patrons are old, I'd say about every other week, a member of the studio passes away and their work in the memory.

The owner, Betsy Griffin, had sold the property and unbeknownst to her, they are planning to turn it into modern luxury apartments. - Purple Narwhal Music & Manga

- They sell both records and manga. Storytime: I got a free Weezer here. It was in a box labeled “free” which had a bunch of broken records. In it, there was just a single Weezer CD (the blue album) with no packaging. Me and Ian put it in my car, and it works perfectly fine. We listened to Buddy Holly on repeat on our way back. Truly amazing stuff.
- Atomic Music and Sonidos! Music And More

The iconic Frederick location is huge and is stacked to the brim with books, DVDs, VHS tapes, records, cassettes, any media that you can hold in your hand and kiss. I even caught sight of some Betamax tapes and film reels there. They have some rare hardcover books behind glass displays. There's even a whole section of just puzzles. The Gaitherburg location is a lot smaller with mostly books. I was told that their Hagertown location is as big as their Frederick store but I have yet to see. PHYSICAL MEDIA FOREVER!!!

It is located where the "Aji Ichiban" snack store location used to be. Oddly enough, the "Aji Ichiban" sign is still up there... which makes things confusing.

- Taco Bamba
- Various DMV locations
- We love Taco Bamba so fucking much you guys. I would just get up and drive to the Rockville location an embarrassing amount of times. The people there started recognizing me. That’s how you know you're too deep in the Bamba. Each restaurant has a couple different menu items. One of my favorite menu items ended up being a specialty taco only served all the way in the Springfield, VA location. CURSES… Anyways, their Al Pastor taco, while greasy, is genuinely one of the best I've had in this area.'
- Z&Z Manoushe Bakery
- Rockville, MD
- If you live in the area, this is a great Palestinian-Jordanian family-owned business to support. They’re located right by exit 6B on the I-270. Their middle eastern flatbreads simply melt in your mouth and the employees there are so vibrant and welcoming. They talk about their experiences and recipes on their Youtube channel. Open Wednesday-Sunday. When I found out I was moving away from Rockville, I just decided to try out everything on their flatbread menu in the span of a week. Each flavor is so good. And remember. IT’S NOT PIZZA. IT’S MANOUSHE!
- Sunshine Gas & Grill / Sunshine General Store

- A hidden no-frills diner gem, I go here for their famous Sunshine burger very often. Make sure to call that they are open since they occasionally go on vacation. Article about it!! Another article about it!!!!
- Zinnia’s
- Silver Spring, MD
- Beautiful restaurant in a cottage surrounded by garden scenery. The place used to be Mrs. K’s Toll House. Take a visit here if you want to live that cottagecore life I guess. - They sure have crepes.
- Pho 75
- Various DMV locations
- Great no frills restaurant for pho. I have a friend who has traveled around tasting pho but he said that this place had the best broth, wow! KEEP IN MIND it is cash only. One time the owner came to the Rockville location when I was eating and said that it’s cash only so he can keep the pho at the same price (and to avoid taxes, so based).

They have some taco flavors I can’t get anywhere else such as cecina, buche, and tripa. I take my friends here and they never forget this place. The locals love it because I do see it get crowded during the weekends. Taqueria Los Primos also has food trucks around College Park.

- Every time I’ve been there, it was super crowded, so make sure you have a reservation. The little bookstore at the front of each location is so cute.

- A little Thai restaurant in College Park. When I was in college, I’d get takeout here constantly for either the pad thai, panang curry, or green curry.
- Tai Chi
- Severna Park and Columbia, MD
- Me and my friends used to meet up at the Severna Park location pretty frequently; it’s pretty big. Their mango bubble tea is so nice. They also serve great ramen and poke bowls. They have this hugeass moving ramen animatronic by the entrance inside that I fuck with heavily.
- The Papermoon Diner
- Baltimore, MD
- The entire look of this diner is basically a huge art project. This place was decorated by students from MICA which explains everything. If you want to be constantly overstimulated, by random vintage knicknacks glued to every corner of your eye, this is the place. What a vibe. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Rusty Scupper
- Baltimore, MD
- Definitely on the pricey side. I love their cream of crab soup. Everytime me and some pals visit the American Visionary art museum, I park in the designated garage for the Rusty Scupper. After that, me and my pals eat something at the Rusty Scupper and get a discount for the parking rate.

- Kam Sam Supermarket
- Rockville, MD
- Closed in 2015, the owners retired. One of my childhood Chinese supermarket stores in Rockville Town Center. I loved the coconut rice cake. Originally located at 300 N Washington St, Rockville.
- Meixin/Maxim Supermarket
- Rockville, MD
- Closed in 2018. Another childhood Chinese supermarket store that is very close to the one above. It also had a huge Chinese jewelry/gift store and a Chinese DVD store next to it. My theory is that bigger nearby supermarkets like New York and Great Wall Supermarket may have eliminated the competition. It is now replaced by a Chase Bank. I have a very vivid childhood memory of watching a fish being violently butchered here. According to one of the yelp reviews, apparently Kam Sam and Maxim had beef with each other. Now they are both gone…
- Milkboy ArtHouse
- College Park, MD
- A small local performing venue on Route One, where University of Maryland is. I haven’t been there personally but I wish I did! I wasn’t interested in concerts during my 2019 freshman semester. I know Will Wood performed here once. Open 2017-2020. From what I heard, it was quite an interesting and unique venue for small musicians.
- Lakeforest Mall
- Rockville, MD
- open for 45 years, 1978 - March 2023. Having lived in Gaithersburg, now this was my childhood mall. I used to come here almost every weekend in my elementary school days. I'll admit it was not the fanciest, especially compared to Montgomery Mall which is still alive, but dammit i loved that place! I'd pass by Nori Japan (now called Tokyo Hibachi) there (it was next to the Hot Topic) for a free hibachi chicken sample every time. The last time I went was in 2019 and I could tell it was going to die. It was half empty and even the McDonald’s left the mall. Apparently a TMobile employee got stabbed there and died so it has that reputation now. It seems they are redeveloping this place.
- White Flint Mall
- Rockville, MD
- There's this one picture from this mall that was spread everywhere within liminal space communities lol. I've only managed to go to White Flint for like two times as a kid before it closed. I had a birthday meal at the Cheesecake Factory location there (this shortly after the main mall had closed) before it moved to Montgomery Mall.
- Seven Seas
- Rockville, MD
- Closed in 2018. Seven Seas was a Chinese restaurant that used to be in Congressional Plaza, where the T.J. Maxx and Plaza Art Store are. Open for 33 years. I used to go there a lot with my family.
- Ziki Japanese Steakhouse
- Gaithersburg, MD
- They still have their Annapolis location, but I grew up next to the Gaithersburg location near Rio, which had closed in 2020. I went there for a couple birthdays, and they put on quite a fun show. Chef balancing an egg on his knife... Big spray bottle shaped like a boy spraying sake into our mouths! Their Gaithersburg location, in an agar.io fashion, got usurped by the Jiffy Lube next to it.
- HorseSpirits Arts Gallery
- Savage, MD
- Used to be the art gallery in Savage Mill. Closed in 2023, now the area is used by Omnihedral.
- SPX Festival
