DMV Area and Maryland Highlight and Hangout Spots

Note: None of the businesses I list on my site are any sort of moral endorsements.
Shop Time!!!
Rio Lakefront and Downtown Crown
Gaithersburg, MD
I grew up in the apartments next to Rio, so I watched Downtown Crown be formed right before my eyes across the street when I waited for the bus stop. The area used to be a huge vacant farm land for a long time. Here have some lore about that mysterious brown building jutting out of tht area.
Kentlands Market Square
Gaithersburg, MD
There’s a Wikipedia page about the quaint lovely Kentlands neighborhood.
Pike and Rose
North Bethesda, MD
Fairly new bougie shopping and hangout place close to the North Bethesda metro station. I enjoy going to the Call Your Mother and Sur La Table location here.
The Mosaic District
Fairfax, VA
Much like Pike & Rose, this is another bougie newly developed shopping and living area. They have an Angelika Film Center & Cafe there which often plays nice independent or foreign films. This is also where they have a mini Bloomingdale store called Bloomie’s… that's a thing now apparently.
Clarendon Crossing
Arlington, VA
Also pretty bougie, expect to pay for parking there.
Montgomery Mall
Bethesda, MD
This is like the one childhood mall of mine that has managed to stayed alive… the food court is pretty. It used to have an Arclight Theater location there.
Bethesda Row
Bethesda, MD
BOUGIEEEEEEEEEEE as FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 I was there walking by the Foxtrot location in this place on the day Foxtrot decided to kill itself. I hear a guy behind me say “Wow, they really weren’t there for that long.” I don’t know how to say it but Bethesda Row has so many expensive brand stores that I’ve never heard of with logos in that fuckass modern font. Are you guys liking the Purple Line construction
Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria
Tysons, VA
For the longest time, my dumb ass thought these were the same place but no. They are two separate malls that are just close to each other. Tysons Galleria is hella bougie with designer end brands left and right. I go in there and the most normal ass t-shirt there costs $200. Definitely fun for the average window shopper but not so much for the average buyer. As for Tysons Corner Center, they have a sushi conveyor belt restaurant in the middle of the mall which is eye-catching (unfortunately the sushi isn’t very good IMO). They also have a store that takes a 3D scan of you or your pet and then 3D prints a tiny version of whatever was scanned. In case you ever wanna do that. There is also a neat candy store called Lolli & Pops. As for the city of Tysons itself… I don't know how to say it, but it feels rather corporate-oriented and artificial. You’ll understand if you go there. I can’t tell if it’s because of all the modern and shiny new development but after being around other places… something about it just feels stale. They have the Capital One headquarters there and you can feel its presence hovering over you.
Arundel Mills Mall
Hanover, MD
Last time I went, there was this one store with crazy whimsical suits called "Why Not Fashion". Not sure if that’s still around, but this is where you would shop if you were a Tumblr Sexyman. There is also a Live! Casino next to it in case you guys wanna gamble. This is where the Medieval Times representing our area is located and that’s the key highlight of this mall.
The Wharf
Southwest Waterfront, DC
Bougie DC waterfront that is built next to the historical Municipal Fish Market. Concert venues The Anthem and Union Stage are also here. You can get to The Wharf by taking the metro to L'Enfant Plaza and walking for about 10 min. It's too expensive to park anywhere.'
Downtown Frederick
Frederick, MD
I love walking around here! It has the library, the Carroll Creek, and all sorts of local eclectic shops and restaurants. To my memory, street parking is free after 5pm or on a Sunday. Other than that, there is the Carroll Creek garage for paid parking.

Not a hangout place but a big shout out to Frederick Community Fridge on 15 W Church St in Downtown Frederick. Described as “mutual aid collective distributing food and supplies to those who need them.” It is next to the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ.
Old Ellicott City
Ellicott City, MD
Much like Downtown Fredrick, take a stroll across Old Ellicott City for the sight of lovely and unique local stores. So dandy … so quaint! Around winter time, they have a bunch of model trains in their window displays. Points of interest: the Forget Me Not Factory gift store has unlimited holiday knick knacks. Everyone that I have shown this place too was amazed by how dense it was with stuff. Please check it out.
Savage Mill
Savage, MD
My ass did not know about this place for the longest time. It’s basically a repurposed mill factory made into a mall. They have a huge antique store, a pottery studio inside, a vintage toy store, and many nice gift places! Please check this place out, it is a hidden gem. I can’t help but feel like COVID killed a lot of the stores that used to exist here, because it’s a little empty at the moment.

Shoutout to the Secrets of the WMATA metro lines! Awesome series of videos documenting the history and fun facts about each DC Metro line and station! I love watching these.

PARKS, GARDENS, AND MUSEUMS!
System Source Computer Museum
Hunt Valley, MD
This building is a 3-in-1 package! It has System Source's Computer Museum of various vintage computers. I went there to attend a computer repair workshop and met some interesting and passionate people. It also has the National Electronics Museum and the Bloop Museum (museum for things related to physical media entertainment). The Bloop Museum got funding to move to Pittsburgh sometime this summer. Nevertheless, I can't believe I didn't know about this wonderful place beforehand. For anyone into this stuff, I overheard about an event known as VCF East being held in New Jersey.
Glen Echo Park
Glen Echo, MD
It used to be a mid century art deco amusement park. It has since been revamped into arts facilities. If you're driving there, make sure to set your GPS to “5801 Oxford Road, Glen Echo” for it to take you to the main parking lot.
Brookside Gardens
Wheaton, MD
They have a gorgeous rose garden! They also have an indoor butterfly garden, a gift shop inside the information center. 50 acres of wonder!
National Seminary Park
Silver Spring, MD
Very riveting and rich history. Whimsical and interesting architecture. That ballroom is insane. Most of this place has been turned into private apartments, but they do guided tours for the place once every month. Apparently someone lives in the Pagoda there. I wish that was me.
NASA Goddard Visitor Center
Greenbelt, MD
Cosmicals cosmicals cosmicals. Make sure your GPS doesn't take you to the other side of the NASA campus that can only be accessed through government clearance. Had that happen to me. Access the visitor area on the main NASA Goddard Entrance on Icesat Rd.
Patuxent Research Refuge/National Wildlife Visitor Center
Laurel, MD
Great for long outdoor walks! They have a cool visitor guest area with information about the local wildlife… and a gift shop with bat merch!
Glenstone Art Museum
Potomac, MD
Free admission with reserved tickets. There's also big green installation in the outdoor section that looks like Shrek. Now, the semantics of this place are highly criticized. TLDR; the wife of Maryland’s billionaire is a huge fan of fine art which is why this place exists. It brings up the question: why have all this art tucked away in such a closed off location? It’s not very accessible due to the long walking distances and so far away from any communities to discover it. I’ve also heard that the billionaire guy is rivals with some other rich guy who lives just across the street, so he bought all the surrounding land and made the museum for this petty rivalry. I can’t confirm but it’s food for thought. I admit the feel of the main building has this cold, lonely, modern staleness that could only be achieved by the rich, but the artwork is nice to see. I especially love the installation for Pipilotti Rist's Ever Is Over All.
Greenbriar Local Park
Potomac, MD
If you have kids… this was my childhood playground. As a child, it blew my mind how huge this place was. It is 25 acres of fun. I think this park is the first time I saw leaves of a ginkgo tree and it blew my mind.
Temperance Alley Garden
U Street, DC
I haven’t been but it looks cool!
Larz Anderson House
Dupont Circle, DC
They constantly hold events here and I attended a wedding here. It is gorgeous inside. A big chunk of it is basically a museum.
United States Botanical Garden
DC, near the Capitol
you probably know about the Smithsonian Museums but did you know plants plants plants plants plants
National Arboretum
Northeast DC
I love that Bonsai Museum. It's kind of beautiful how some of those Bonsai trees have outlived generations of people.
Artechouse
DC
VR art installations! Went here for a field trip in college. Tickets are on the pricey end for the amount of mileage you get from it, though.
Wolf Trap
Vienna, VA
Half national park, half performing arts venue! I saw Japanese Breakfast and Belle & Sebastian here.
Baltimore’s National Aquarium
Baltimore, MD
This aquarium is MASSIVE. It’s got 5 floors AND A RAINFOREST SECTION!!?? I told my buddy Ian to sample one of the bird calls from the rainforest section and he used it in one of his songs.
American Visionary Museum
Baltimore, MD
Outsider art museum. Art often by lesser known artists or people from disenfranchised communities. Very interesting and different from the stuff you'd typically see in other museums. This is the art that stares into your soul. Also, the Sideshow gift shop should count as an exhibition itself. Just look at this place.

Shoutout to the Atomic Books from Baltimore have their own Hot List for the Baltimore region! This is great because I'm really not that familiar with the Baltimore area to say more about it.

DMV Area and Maryland Arts Communities
Visarts
Rockville, MD
Gallery spaces, art studio spaces, art classes, and LOTS OF CERAMICS STUFF. I think their entire third floor is all ceramics-related except for one room, haha. Sometimes people hold weddings here.
The Compass Atelier
Kensington, MD
Used to be in Rockville but relocated to Kensington in April 2024.
Stone Branch School of Art
Rockville, MD
Back in like 2016, they had hand drawn animation and stop motion classes which is a rarity in this area. I’m not sure if they still have that.
Strathmore
North Bethesda, MD
Huge performing arts venue. I went here as a child a couple times but I don’t remember much.
Second Chance Inc.
Baltimore, MD
Massive thrift store! Probably the biggest I’ve ever been in.
The Beachkraft
Olney, MD
The people here are so nice/ If you're reading this, I love you guys.
Glen Echo Park
Glen Echo, MD
YES good ol' Glecho has returned in a second appearance as an entry here! Glen Echo Park used to be mid-century art deco amusement park, now it's repurposed for art classes. They hold some interesting classes in their catalog, such as Irish Dances, puppetry, stone carving, glassblowing, etc. Super interesting. I took a glassblowing workshop taught by the wonderful Valencia Glass.
Arts Barn
Gaithersburg, MD
They hold art and theater classes and camps for kids. In the heart of the Kentlands community.
Artists on Market
Gaithersburg, MD
Dainty local makers shop in Kentlands Market Square.

Rockville, MD
Girls Who Paint
Kensington, MD
Dark Horse Studio
Rockville, MD
Langley Park Community Center
Adelphi, MD
The Pottery Studio here is the best kept secret of the DMV area. I only found out about this place because someone at a ceramics sale told me about it. I had a lot of trouble trying to find how to join the studio. DUDE I legit had to drive there and find someone inside the studio to give me the contact for who runs it and the link for signing up for classes (most of the time, the person running the front desk of the rec center who answers your phone call are pretty clueless about what's going on there). This studio has been around for AGES. Some of the people here have been using the studio since the 80s, decades before I was born. You have to be signed up for a class and have a membership to the rec center to use the studio. The place is run by Donnademma and there's like 50 handmixed glazes to choose from. It's so interesting. You would overhear about various little dramas and gossip going on at this studio. Apparently one of the staple glazes gradually changed from purple to blue over the years (LOL???). Because a lot of the studio patrons are old, I'd say about every other week, a member of the studio passes away and their work in the memory.
Moonlight Studios
Beltsville, MD
Brand new art studio with pottery classes and studio space. They named their kiln Bertha.
Pyramid Atlantic Art Center
Hyattsville, MD
A staple of the Hyattsville area! They got printmaking, gallery shows, and upstairs is where the Hyattsville Figure Drawing group is held.

Red Dirt Studio
Mt Rainier, MD
Takoma ARTery

Griffin Art Center/NOMA Gallery
Frederick, MD
This was the first place I had modeled at so it’s got a special place in my heart. As of writing this in early 2024, I got word that they will be closing down in about a year. The owner, Betsy Griffin, had sold the property and unbeknownst to her, they are planning to turn it into modern luxury apartments. Damn… I heard the artists there are looking for a new place in another town. As of now, it seems like it is still standing… but for how long?

Record store with all kinds of media. Only opens Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Like CDepot but a little neater. People come here constantly because their selection of media is HUGE.
Purple Narwhal Music & Manga
Rockville, MD
They sell both records and manga. Storytime: I got a free Weezer here. It was in a box labeled “free” which had a bunch of broken records. In it, there was just a single Weezer CD (the blue album) with no packaging. Me and Ian put it in my car, and it works perfectly fine. We listened to Buddy Holly on repeat on our way back. Truly amazing stuff.
Atomic Music and Sonidos! Music And More

Atomic Music is an amazing and huge instrument store with a lot of eclectic vintage music equipment. Sonidos is the newly opened record store right next to it, sharing the same building. Both are great.

The iconic Frederick location is huge and is stacked to the brim with books, DVDs, VHS tapes, records, cassettes, any media that you can hold in your hand and kiss. I even caught sight of some Betamax tapes and film reels there. They have some rare hardcover books behind glass displays. There's even a whole section of just puzzles. Another small and quaint Japanese grocery store.
Ebisu Life Store

Japanese convenience store on Rockville Pike. This is where I get my shampoo and conditioner.
Maxim Watch & Gift Shop
Rockville, MD
Chinese gift store. Perfect for buying jade jewelry or red envelopes. I thought this place was gone when Maxim Supermarket ran out of business but they actually relocated nearby. It is located where the "Aji Ichiban" snack store location used to be. Oddly enough, the "Aji Ichiban" sign is still up there... which makes things confusing.

DMV Area and Maryland restaurants and food-related places that I’ve been to OR I find is worth pointing out

Shit dude… maybe you’ll find me in the wild in one of these.

Taco Bamba
Various DMV locations
We love Taco Bamba so fucking much you guys. I would just get up and drive to the Rockville location an embarrassing amount of times. The people there started recognizing me. That’s how you know you're too deep in the Bamba. Each restaurant has a couple different menu items. One of my favorite menu items ended up being a specialty taco only served all the way in the Springfield, VA location. CURSES… Anyways, their Al Pastor taco, while greasy, is genuinely one of the best I've had in this area.'
Z&Z Manoushe Bakery
Rockville, MD
If you live in the area, this is a great Palestinian-Jordanian family-owned business to support. They’re located right by exit 6B on the I-270. Their middle eastern flatbreads simply melt in your mouth and the employees there are so vibrant and welcoming. They talk about their experiences and recipes on their Youtube channel. Open Wednesday-Sunday. When I found out I was moving away from Rockville, I just decided to try out everything on their flatbread menu in the span of a week. Each flavor is so good. And remember. IT’S NOT PIZZA. IT’S MANOUSHE!
Sunshine Gas & Grill / Sunshine General Store
Brookeville, MD
A hidden no-frills diner gem, I go here for their famous Sunshine burger very often. Make sure to call that they are open since they occasionally go on vacation. Article about it!! Another article about it!!!!
Zinnia’s
Silver Spring, MD
Beautiful restaurant in a cottage surrounded by garden scenery. The place used to be Mrs. K’s Toll House. Take a visit here if you want to live that cottagecore life I guess. I was told they plant veggies in the garden and use it for meals. There is a section about this place in the Silver Spring documentary VHS tape.
Eden Center
Falls Church, VA
Massive cultural strip mall of various Vietnamese commercial businesses, particularly groceries, bakeries, restaurants, corner stores. Such a vibrant cultural hub. Here is its Wikipedia page. To my surprise, one of the VHS tapes I archived featured a segment within this location, check it out!
Lavande Patisserie
Rockville, MD
Cute French cafe with pastries, lattes, and sandwiches! Their Yuki cake is sublime. I can go ON and ON about the Yuki cake specifically. It is located in Rockville Town Center.
Thai Chef
Rockville, MD and Dupont Circle, DC
Very lavish interior design!
Kyoto Matcha
Rockville, MD
Cute Japanese desserts, their signature item is their matcha crepe cake.
Gyuzo Japanese BBQ
Rockville, MD
Japanese BBQ restaurant. I went here twice, it’s super fun to barbecue the meat! On the pricey end.
Amai Crepe
Rockville, MD
They sure have crepes.
Pho 75
Various DMV locations
Great no frills restaurant for pho. I have a friend who has traveled around tasting pho but he said that this place had the best broth, wow! KEEP IN MIND it is cash only. One time the owner came to the Rockville location when I was eating and said that it’s cash only so he can keep the pho at the same price (and to avoid taxes, so based).
Clyde’s
Rockville, MD
The Tower Oaks Lodge location in Rockville is insane. The cabin aesthetic of this place ... the koi fish outside … what a vibe.
Urban Hot Pot
Rockville, Columbia of MD and Fairfax, VA
I’ve never been but it is quite a coveted place. I gotta invite my friends here sometime.

A very cute and charming Asian-European bakery and cafe.

Various Maryland locations
$7 GYRO WEDNESDAYS!!!

A staple in this area.
Call Your Mother Deli
Various DMV locations
I love their Sun City bagels!
Cracked Eggery
Various DC locations
DUDE. Eggs eggs eggs.

Famous food court in DC. It is definitely on the pricy side.

Authentic Mexican tacos! The locals love it there! I love my tacos completely pelted with cilantro and diced onion.
Franklin’s Brewery
Hyattsville, MD
It's a restaurant that also comes with a quirky vintage convenience store.
Taqueria Los Primos
North Laurel, MD
DUDE THE LOCATION IN NORTH LAUREL IS SOOOO BEAUTIFUL. This restaurant is one of my personal favorite places to get tacos. They have some taco flavors I can’t get anywhere else such as cecina, buche, and tripa. I take my friends here and they never forget this place. The locals love it because I do see it get crowded during the weekends. Taqueria Los Primos also has food trucks around College Park.
Busboy and Poets
Various DC locations
Every time I’ve been there, it was super crowded, so make sure you have a reservation. The little bookstore at the front of each location is so cute.
Aroy Thai
College Park, MD
A little Thai restaurant in College Park. When I was in college, I’d get takeout here constantly for either the pad thai, panang curry, or green curry.
Tai Chi
Severna Park and Columbia, MD
Me and my friends used to meet up at the Severna Park location pretty frequently; it’s pretty big. Their mango bubble tea is so nice. They also serve great ramen and poke bowls. They have this hugeass moving ramen animatronic by the entrance inside that I fuck with heavily.
The Papermoon Diner
Baltimore, MD
The entire look of this diner is basically a huge art project. This place was decorated by students from MICA which explains everything. If you want to be constantly overstimulated, by random vintage knicknacks glued to every corner of your eye, this is the place. What a vibe. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Rusty Scupper
Baltimore, MD
Definitely on the pricey side. I love their cream of crab soup. Everytime me and some pals visit the American Visionary art museum, I park in the designated garage for the Rusty Scupper. After that, me and my pals eat something at the Rusty Scupper and get a discount for the parking rate.
Mizu Sushi
Baltimore, MD
I only went here once with a friend but their salmon was damn freaking good.
Avery’s Maryland Grill
Frederick, MD
WOO WOO MARYLAND CRABS CRABS CRABS SEAFOOD OLD BAY CRAB CAKES MARYLAND

I haven’t been here but… if you have loads of money and want to eat some premium Wagyu Kobe Beef… here you go!
Gone but not forgotten…
Behnke’s Nursery
Beltsville, MD
Closed in 2019. Large plants nursery. I had only gone there once before it closed in 2019 but it was fantastic. The land got auctioned off and now it’s a 7-11 gas station. Behnke’s was open for 89 years. Old website. Retrospective article.
Toy Castle
Cabin John, MD
Quirky independent toy store with vintage stuff like Raggedy Anne dolls. I only went there twice before it closed due to COVID. Open for 41 years. Video of the place the time I visited and found out it was closed.
Kam Sam Supermarket
Rockville, MD
Closed in 2015, the owners retired. One of my childhood Chinese supermarket stores in Rockville Town Center. I loved the coconut rice cake. Originally located at 300 N Washington St, Rockville.
Meixin/Maxim Supermarket
Rockville, MD
Closed in 2018. Another childhood Chinese supermarket store that is very close to the one above. It also had a huge Chinese jewelry/gift store and a Chinese DVD store next to it. My theory is that bigger nearby supermarkets like New York and Great Wall Supermarket may have eliminated the competition. It is now replaced by a Chase Bank. I have a very vivid childhood memory of watching a fish being violently butchered here. According to one of the yelp reviews, apparently Kam Sam and Maxim had beef with each other. Now they are both gone…
Milkboy ArtHouse
College Park, MD
A small local performing venue on Route One, where University of Maryland is. I haven’t been there personally but I wish I did! I wasn’t interested in concerts during my 2019 freshman semester. I know Will Wood performed here once. Open 2017-2020. From what I heard, it was quite an interesting and unique venue for small musicians.
Lakeforest Mall
Rockville, MD
open for 45 years, 1978 - March 2023. Having lived in Gaithersburg, now this was my childhood mall. I used to come here almost every weekend in my elementary school days. I'll admit it was not the fanciest, especially compared to Montgomery Mall which is still alive, but dammit i loved that place! I'd pass by Nori Japan (now called Tokyo Hibachi) there (it was next to the Hot Topic) for a free hibachi chicken sample every time. The last time I went was in 2019 and I could tell it was going to die. It was half empty and even the McDonald’s left the mall. Apparently a TMobile employee got stabbed there and died so it has that reputation now. It seems they are redeveloping this place.
White Flint Mall
Rockville, MD
There's this one picture from this mall that was spread everywhere within liminal space communities lol. I've only managed to go to White Flint for like two times as a kid before it closed. I had a birthday meal at the Cheesecake Factory location there (this shortly after the main mall had closed) before it moved to Montgomery Mall.
Seven Seas
Rockville, MD
Closed in 2018. Seven Seas was a Chinese restaurant that used to be in Congressional Plaza, where the T.J. Maxx and Plaza Art Store are. Open for 33 years. I used to go there a lot with my family.
Ziki Japanese Steakhouse
Gaithersburg, MD
They still have their Annapolis location, but I grew up next to the Gaithersburg location near Rio, which had closed in 2020. I went there for a couple birthdays, and they put on quite a fun show. Chef balancing an egg on his knife... Big spray bottle shaped like a boy spraying sake into our mouths! Their Gaithersburg location, in an agar.io fashion, got usurped by the Jiffy Lube next to it.
HorseSpirits Arts Gallery
Savage, MD
Used to be the art gallery in Savage Mill. Closed in 2023, now the area is used by Omnihedral.
Events in the Area

Well-known cons like KatsuCon, Otakon, and Magfest are held here. There’s farmers markets and local vendors everywhere, constantly. Go on Eventbrite to look. Check out Locally Crafted and Shops Made in DC for possible marketplace events like that.

SPX Festival
North Bethesda, MD
What an amazing event. You really get a vibe of the queer indie press scene here. I can't believe my ass has been here for 20 years and I didnt know about this event until the year COVID hit. Rebecca Sugar spoke here. My pal Ian and I tried to get a table here but alas it is a lottery system… my luck hasn’t hit so far. Maybe one day!

Awesome Con

This one’s also pretty new. I tabled at the first year they held it, back when it was called MonkeyCon.
MoComCon
Montgomery County, MD
Local convention held in the Montgomery County libraries, definitely catered towards younger kids. Originally held in Silver Spring library, now moved to the Germantown library.
